China's prefabricated substations and high-voltage equipment are becoming a new foundation for global energy systems

In the scorching sands of Oman, where years of heavy construction were once required, today the energy hearts of the future rise in just a few weeks. Chinese modular substations, like giant construction sets, arrive across the ocean in neat containers and are assembled on site with millimetre precision. In the era of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, time has become the main currency, and it is the speed of energy system deployment that determines who will lead the global technology race. China, having transformed its manufacturing power into intelligent engineering solutions, offers the world not just equipment, but a ready‑made architecture for the energy transition, where every component is designed, manufactured and tested thousands of kilometres away before it takes its place.

A 400‑kilovolt Chinese‑built substation was recently successfully commissioned in the deserts of Oman. The facility arrived across the ocean as 24 neatly packaged modular components, designed, manufactured and pre‑tested thousands of kilometres away. What traditionally required years of arduous civil construction and on‑site commissioning was accomplished in just a few weeks thanks to the modular approach. "The Oman project is our highest‑voltage and most integrated prefabricated substation abroad to date. Construction of a traditional substation takes one and a half to two years. But from order receipt, production, shipping and on‑site assembly to final power delivery, we did it all in less than six months," said Ji Guanghui, Vice President of Qingdao TGOOD Electric Co., Ltd.

The remarkable speed is only half the story. Behind the 30‑percent improvement in project delivery lies a well‑thought‑out two‑stage strategy. On the one hand, the rapid development of the international energy market, along with the booming construction of data centres and computing hubs, has led to a sharp increase in demand for transformers and prefabricated substations. On the other hand, through active efforts to establish regional standards and ensure international recognition, the company has streamlined regulatory compliance and strengthened its competitive advantages already at the design stage. "With traditional methods, the production cycle for our entire product range was very long, taking about one to two years. But now, through standard alignment and handling differences with additional elements, we can cut the lead time to less than three months and save about ten million yuan per year," said Xu Guochuan, assistant general manager of the international division of Qingdao TGOOD Electric.

This wave of high‑tech manufacturing is also delivering big results at home. In the first half of this year, exports of electrical equipment from Shandong Province reached 26.7 billion yuan (about US$3.95 billion), up 9.3 percent year‑on‑year, with substation and transformer products alone exceeding seven billion yuan. "Our products are mainly exported to countries and regions such as the European Union, the Middle East, Africa and the Republic of Korea, with exports to the EU and Africa maintaining relatively high growth. In terms of products, high‑voltage large‑capacity power transmission equipment and prefabricated substations are showing strong growth, becoming a brand‑new engine for foreign trade," said Liu Shuxia, head of corporate credit management at Qingdao Dagang Customs.

As the world rapidly transitions into the digital age, these ready‑to‑use energy solutions are fundamentally changing the speed, scale and methodology of global energy system deployment. International demand for reliable and rapidly deployable energy infrastructure continues to grow, and Chinese manufacturers, betting on standardisation and modularity, are already shaping the new face of global energy, where assembly time is measured in weeks rather than years.

As CCTV+ reports, the successful implementation of the Oman project confirms that Chinese energy solutions are in demand across all continents, and the flexibility of production chains allows adaptation to any climatic and infrastructural challenges, opening new horizons for international cooperation.
