Chinese exports hit records: air conditioners for Europe, robots for the world
As the world erects new tariff barriers, Chinese industry responds not with protectionism but with quality and innovation. From household air conditioners saving Europe from scorching heat to smart robots conquering markets in 140 countries, Chinese exports prove that competitiveness is born not from cheap labour but from technological superiority and the ability to adapt to the strictest global standards. Even amid global turbulence, the "new trio" – robots, AI and innovative medicines – is paving the way to the future.
In the first half of this year, total imports and exports exceeded $3.69 trillion. Scorching heat swept across many European countries, driving strong demand for cooling products. At an air conditioner factory in Qingdao, a large order from France keeps production lines running at full capacity. "European orders are surging. Just a few days ago, we received an urgent order from France for 70,000 units," said the plant's technical director. To cope with the order surge, production lines switched to new models, and the company redesigned its entire air conditioner line for Europe to meet stricter environmental standards. "It saves 42 per cent more electricity than a standard air conditioner," said the head of Haier Air Conditioner's Hungary market business.
Customs data show that in the first half of 2026, China's exports of cooling appliances, including air conditioners, fans and refrigerators, reached about $15 billion. Beyond these traditional goods, some "new faces" also showed impressive results abroad, including robots, artificial intelligence and innovative medicines – regarded as the "new trio" of China's future industries.
At a newly opened plant in Suzhou, orders for robotic vacuum cleaners are booked through December, with half coming from overseas markets. "Our planned production capacity should reach 7.5 million units," said the production manager at Ecovacs. In the Wuzhong district alone, there are more than 1,600 robotics and smart manufacturing companies. The region also attracts top talent: engineers from radar, sensor and casing suppliers work together to upgrade products, improving navigation, endurance and efficiency.
Customs data show that in the first half of the year, China's exports of cleaning robots and bionic robots reached $2.67 billion. Exports of industrial robots reached $928 million, up 18.6 per cent year‑on‑year, with shipments going to more than 140 countries.
