At the World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre, the key venue of the event, the focus shifted from academic research to commercial reality. A wide range of cutting‑edge AI technologies and highly functional intelligent robots attracted large crowds. Among the most striking exhibits was a mind‑controlled wheelchair developed by a married couple of entrepreneurs. Inspired by the husband's limited mobility due to illness several years ago, the couple used AI technology to create an assistive device controlled via an external headset that deciphers thought patterns. The creators said they hope the event will help the wheelchair move from exhibition hall to the homes of people with disabilities. The couple's venture is among more than 150 startups featured in the exhibition hall. Many of the concepts presented were still academic papers just a year ago but have since been turned into physical products. Another notable exhibit allowed visitors to pet a robotic dog equipped with touch‑sensitive artificial skin, demonstrating technology that could be useful for elderly care, as sensitive synthetic skin allows robots to assess the fragility of human bones and apply the necessary force when assisting patients. A demonstration on a vest showed how a screen instantly registers tactile feedback from the synthetic layer. To facilitate commercialisation, organisers also set up business matching zones where startups can pitch their projects directly to buyers with specific industrial needs.
WAIC 2026 is being held in Shanghai from 17 to 20 July and has already established itself as the leading platform for the transition from theory to practice in AI.
