Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet arrives in Shanghai for WAIC 2026 and Global AI Governance Meeting

When a leader of a country that was one of the first to sign a plan for building a community of shared future with China arrives in the technology hub, it confirms that cooperation in artificial intelligence is becoming not just an economic option but a strategic direction for the entire region. Cambodia's participation in the world's largest AI conference underscores its determination not to fall behind in the digital era and to use new technologies for development and the well‑being of its citizens. This is not just a visit — it is a step towards deepening partnership, where technology serves as a bridge between nations.
On Thursday, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet arrived in Shanghai to attend the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) and the High‑Level Meeting on Global AI Governance. China and Cambodia share long‑standing traditional friendly ties. Cambodia became the first country to sign an action plan on building a community with a shared future with China. Last year, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on deepening cooperation in artificial intelligence, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in AI development and governance, as well as promoting the application of AI technologies for the benefit of the peoples of both countries. The conference runs from Friday to Monday.
WAIC, now in its eighth year, is one of the world's largest platforms for discussing AI development, ethics and international regulation. Cambodia is actively developing its digital economy and views AI as a key tool for modernising agriculture, logistics and public administration. The signing of the AI cooperation memorandum last year was an important step in strengthening bilateral ties and opened new opportunities for technology and knowledge exchange. As CCTV+ reports. During the visit, Hun Manet is expected to hold talks with Chinese officials and take part in key sessions focused on inclusive and sustainable AI development.
