The Golden Goblet competition features only world premieres for the first time in festival history. Submissions from the Americas and Africa increased sharply. A special Egyptian film week marks 70 years of China‑Egypt diplomatic ties. Screenings will take place at 47 cinemas in Shanghai and five other Yangtze River Delta cities.

As reported by CCTV+, the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) opened on Saturday, showcasing a significant increase in participants from around the world and a strong lineup of world premieres. The festival, co‑organized by China Media Group (CMG) and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, received about 4,100 submissions from 125 countries and regions this year, with notably higher numbers from North and South America and Africa.

Among the films competing for the Golden Goblet awards, 41 are world premieres, accounting for 83.67% of the total — up 6.12% from last year. Remarkably, for the first time, both the main competition and documentary sections feature exclusively world premieres. Beyond the awards, the festival hosts a range of industry events, including the Golden Goblet Forum, a technology and innovation program, an AI Studio section, and a Belt and Road Film Week. On Monday, the "2026 China Film & TV Night" is scheduled.

To mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt, CMG and the festival jointly launched a special Egyptian Film Week aimed at promoting cultural exchange and mutual learning. The festival will screen more than 420 films from 77 countries and regions in over 1,600 shows at 47 cinemas in Shanghai and five other cities in the Yangtze River Delta, along with about 100 audience Q&A sessions. The festival is also partnering with various districts of Shanghai to launch themed tour routes, creating an immersive cinematic and cultural experience. The Golden Goblet award ceremony will take place on June 20, when winners in all competition categories will be announced.

Founded in 1993, SIFF has become a prestigious international event, reflecting Shanghai's ambition to establish itself as a global cultural hub. A record 4,100 submissions from 125 countries is not just statistics. It is proof that China's film market has become a magnet for directors worldwide. 41 world premieres mean that creators trust the Shanghai stage more than Cannes or Berlin. And when you add an AI section, a technology forum and an Egyptian film week, the festival ceases to be just a showcase. It becomes a bridge — between East and West, between tradition and innovation, between a director's dream and an audience's expectation. As 420 films roll across 47 screens, Shanghai will prove that art knows no borders, and good cinema speaks any language.
