During the regular meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on December 5, Turkmenistan was unanimously elected to the Commission on Population and Development for the period 2024-2028. This is reported by the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations on its page.
It is noted that thanks to the support of the Council members, Turkmenistan currently serves as a member of the Commission for two consecutive terms: 2016- 2020 and 2020-2024.
The Commission on Population and Development (CPD) is one of the ten functional commissions of the ECOSOC, being the supervisory, coordinating and advisory body of the Council on issues such as problems and trends in the field of population and statistics, the integration of global strategies in this area into national and regional programs and plans.
The permanent secretariat of the Commission is the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
The heads of the State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan annually participate in the sessions of the Commission in New York.
