ASHGABAT, April 6 | ORIENT. Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Iraq, Jassim Mohammed Al-Attar. The main focus of the talks was the development of "bilateral relations in the political, diplomatic, trade, economic, and cultural and humanitarian spheres," the diplomatic ministry reported.

The opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in March 2026 was a logical outcome of the intensified dialogue that began in October 2025 during political consultations in Baghdad. The presence of a full-fledged representative office in Ashgabat transforms contacts from "one-time meetings" to ongoing operational interaction.

While the official Foreign Ministry release is sparse on details, ORIENT experts highlight key points of contact:

Energy Bridge: Iraq is a partner of Turkmenistan in the context of potential natural gas swaps (via Iran). Strengthening the diplomatic mission will allow for more effective coordination of this complex logistical project.

Business Missions: The parties confirmed their interest in establishing direct contacts between entrepreneurs. Iraqi businesses see Turkmenistan as a reliable supplier of energy resources and chemical products, while Ashgabat sees Iraq as a gateway to new Middle Eastern markets.

Humanitarian: Expanding ties in science, sports, and tourism were discussed, which is particularly relevant given the growing interest of Iraqi citizens in Turkmenistan's educational and health opportunities.

Regular exchanges on regional issues confirm that Baghdad sees Ashgabat as a key player in ensuring stability in Central Asia, while Turkmenistan views Iraq as an important link in its Middle East strategy.
