ORIENT | March 28. Ashgabat is preparing for the fifth meeting of the Turkmenistan-UN Strategic Advisory Council, which will take place on March 31. At a government meeting on Friday, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov presented the forum's agenda, reaffirming the country's status as one of the most proactive partners in the Community of Nations.

The central topic will be the preparation of the third Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Turkmenistan has already successfully defended two reviews (in 2019 and 2023) at the ECOSOC Political Forum in New York.

The upcoming third report will provide a detailed snapshot of how the global goals are being translated into the lives of every Turkmen citizen.

Following Turkmenistan's accession to the Global Commitment to Reduce Methane Emissions at COP-28 in Dubai, the work is moving into practical action. A program of specific measures has been developed jointly with the UN. This includes not only environmental standards but also technological modernization of the fuel and energy sector.

Turkmenistan is finalizing the development of a unique program, "Youth, Peace, and Security," for 2026–2028. The project will serve as the foundation for the Central Asian Youth Dialogue. The goal is to engage the next generation as active participants in regional diplomacy, not just listeners.

The agenda also includes issues related to the Turkmenistan–UNESCO Trust Fund. A package of documents for 2026 is being prepared for signature, which will secure the presence of Turkmen heritage in the World Cultural Register.

The fifth Council meeting on March 31 is the final time to coordinate its efforts before taking to the international stage. Importantly, Turkmenistan is not simply "reporting" to the UN, but is a co-author of programs. The methane program and youth strategy for 2026–2028 are investments in the country's reputation, which translates into investor trust and stability in the region.
