From March 22 to 28, the Ashgabat Chess and Checkers School is battling for the championship title in a fundamentally new format for independent Turkmenistan – the team championship.

While individual tournaments highlight individual skill, the team championship is a test of stress resilience and teamwork. For the first time in decades, sports schools, universities, and government departments have fielded their "teams" to determine whose chess school is the strongest.

Who's Vying for the Crown?

Twelve teams are participating in the tournament. The field is impressively diverse, ranging from specialized schools and universities to departmental clubs and public organizations.

The participants include the capital's schools Aşgabat, Ýaşlyk, and Nesil; the Galkan (Ministry of Internal Affairs) and Bagtyýarlyk clubs; two strong teams from Lebap, Lebapchess-1 and Lebapchess-2; as well as the Akhal velayat team, the KüştÄlemi Chess Academy, the Talyp Sport university team (IFKS), the Petro-Canada team (EU Halk Khazına), and Ruhubelent, representing the sports club for the disabled.

The tournament's team format adds a special intrigue to the competition, where not only the individual strength of the players is crucial, but also the teamwork, strategy, and support of their partners.

Holding this championship is an important step in popularizing chess, strengthening sports cooperation, and identifying the country's strongest teams. The tournament promises to be a highlight in the national competition calendar and lay a solid foundation for the further development of team chess in Turkmenistan.
