Turkmenistan and the Red Cross Strengthen the Humanitarian Foundations of Regional Security

In a context where regional stability requires not only political but also profound humanitarian solutions, Ashgabat is affirming its status as a reliable platform for international law. The visit of Biljana Milosevic, head of the regional office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), was another step in this direction.
On March 13, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov discussed key aspects of cooperation with Ms. Milosevic. For Turkmenistan, cooperation with the Red Cross complements the practical implementation of its policy of neutrality.
One of the central topics of the conversation was the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to declare 2028 the Year of International Law. In an era of global legal turbulence and a lack of trust, the call to return to fundamental norms sounds like a necessary fulcrum. The ICRC, as the guardian of humanitarian law, serves as a natural and strategic ally for Ashgabat in this regard.

The parties discussed in detail the protection of civilians and monitoring the situation in the region. In this dialogue, Turkmenistan emphasized its commitment to the principles of humanity, impartiality, and independence—the constants that allow the country to remain an "island of tranquility." The importance of expert exchanges and joint training and consultations, which help strengthen national humanitarian response capacity, was noted.
The partnership between Ashgabat and the Red Cross is a long-term collaboration aimed at ensuring that international humanitarian law remains a living and functioning instrument, not just textbook text.
