Ashgabat | ORIENT. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan has become a platform for discussing the prospects of Turkmen-Canadian relations. Deputy Foreign Minister Akhmet Gurbanov met with Ambassador of Canada Christopher Duggan, who arrived in the Turkmen capital from Astana.

Despite their geographical distance, Ashgabat and Ottawa demonstrate similar approaches to key issues on the global agenda. This rapprochement is based on many years of positive experience supporting each other's initiatives at the UN.

The meeting outlined clear priorities for the current year: re-energizing trade and economic ties and expanding cultural exchange. To give this process legal force, the parties agreed to improve the legal framework. This will create the necessary foundation for business and investment.

One of the practical outcomes of the meeting was an agreement to hold full-fledged inter-MFA consultations this year. This will allow diplomats to move from general vectors to discussing specific projects in the humanitarian and technological spheres.

Despite being located in different hemispheres, Canada and Turkmenistan share common growth areas. These include, first and foremost, high-tech agriculture and water management, where Canada's experience adapting to challenging climates is considered exemplary. Also, on the agenda for potential cooperation are green energy and aviation, areas where Canadian companies traditionally rank among the world's top performers. The decision to hold inter-MFA consultations in 2026 indicates that the parties are ready to move beyond formal familiarization to practical innovation transfer.
