On January 10, construction of Africa’s largest airport began in Bishoftu, Ethiopia. The total cost of the project amounts to 12.5 billion US dollars.

Bishoftu International Airport (Debre Zeit), located approximately 45 km southeast of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, will be able to accommodate 270 aircraft and serve up to 110 million passengers annually. The project was initiated by Ethiopian Airlines, which aims to expand its presence in the African market.

Initially, the project was estimated at 10 billion dollars, but its cost has since increased. A total of 610 million dollars has already been allocated for land preparation works, while the main contractors are expected to begin construction in August 2026.

The completion of the airport is planned for 2030.
