As the world searches for ways to combat global freshwater shortages, innovation is emerging from an unexpected source. In early January 2026, California-based startup Epic Cleantec unveiled a unique product – a beverage created using water that has undergone an ultra-high-level purification system similar to the one used for decades on the International Space Station (ISS).

What began as a daring scientific experiment has officially entered retail. Shower Hour IPA and Laundry Club Kölsch are now available in California stores and online in 12 US states. This milestone elevates the water recycling concept from a pilot project to a large-scale commercial distribution.

How It Works: The Physics of Purity

NASA-inspired technology recycles up to 99% of household water. The process of converting shower and laundry waste into an ultra-pure base for brewing involves several high-tech steps:

Membrane bioreactors filter organics and contaminants at the microscopic level;

Reverse osmosis removes dissolved solids and tiny impurities.

UV disinfection and oxidation destroy all potential pathogens.

The result is water that not only meets, but often exceeds, the quality standards of regular municipal drinking water.

A Global Problem and a Local Solution

Buildings around the world consume approximately 15% of all drinking water on the planet, yet almost none recycle it. The Epic system collects this valuable resource directly from residential buildings and processes it using the same protocols that allow astronauts to survive in the resource-limited conditions of space.

The first test batch of 7,500 cans was released in late 2022 and was named "Invention of the Year" by TIME magazine. Viral success on social media and the attention of UN experts convinced the company that the market is ready for full-scale commercial production.

"We want to show that recycled water isn't scary, but safe and delicious," note the project's creators. Initiatives like these are becoming a critical step toward conscious consumption, turning futuristic ideas into everyday reality.
