Disney and OpenAI Will Create a New Film: $1 Billion Investment and Marvel Characters in the Sora Neural Network
The Walt Disney Company has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI. The studio will invest $1 billion in the developer of ChatGPT to integrate its iconic characters into the Sora video-generation neural network. The agreement is set for three years and makes Disney the first major licensed-content partner of OpenAI.
As part of the deal, Sora will gain access to a library of around 200 characters and locations from the Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars universes. Users will be able to generate short videos featuring Mickey Mouse, Iron Man, or Simba directly from text prompts. An important limitation applies: the agreement covers only animation and fictional creatures and does not include the voices or likenesses of real actors.
The first results of the collaboration are expected to appear on the Disney+ platform in early 2026. For fans, this means the emergence of new interactive content where the boundaries between professional animation and user-generated creativity become increasingly blurred. For the industry, it is a clear signal that major Hollywood studios, once cautious about AI, are now officially integrating these technologies into production.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that the partnership will expand storytelling possibilities, enabling neural networks to create world-class content based on Disney’s legendary stories.
