Valve Will Enable Android Games for the Steam Deck and Its New VR Console
Valve is actively developing a new compatibility platform under the codename Lepton. This project is designed to run Android applications and games on the SteamOS operating system, which is strategically important for both the portable Steam Deck console and the company’s upcoming VR headset.
A logo related to Lepton has already appeared on the official Steam page. The platform, presumed to be a fork of Waydroid, will allow an Android system to run within a Linux environment — similar to how Proton adapts Windows games for Linux.
The development of Lepton is closely linked to Valve’s new VR headset known as Steam Frame VR. Since the headset will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor based on the ARM64 architecture, Lepton will allow users to run Android applications directly in virtual reality.
Thanks to this project, SteamOS users will gain access to a wide range of Android applications, including potentially more high-quality AAA games. Lepton aims to unify Valve’s content ecosystem and simplify life for both developers and gamers.
