Scientists from Shanghai Jiao Tong University have developed a revolutionary new technology that allows drinking water to be extracted directly from the surrounding atmosphere. This innovation, adapted to various climate conditions—including high temperatures and low humidity—promises to make a significant contribution to addressing the global shortage of water resources, China Daily reports.

The system uses a comprehensive method that includes condensation, absorption, and a heat pump to collect water.

A key component of the development is an autonomous station powered entirely by solar energy. This allows it to operate without any external infrastructure.

The device, comparable in size to a small bus stop, demonstrates high efficiency:

• Operating range: from 15°C to 40°C, and at air humidity levels from 35% to 99%.

• Output: The compact station can produce up to 50 liters of drinking water per day.

The platform can also be built with a daily capacity of up to 1,600 liters, making it suitable for supplying water to small settlements or regions with unstable access to drinking water. The invention is expected to become a vital resource for the world’s arid regions.
