China opens Huafa Snow World: The largest indoor ski resort in the world
In Shenzhen, one of China’s largest megacities, Huafa Snow World — a massive sports and entertainment complex — has opened its doors. Its artificial snow zone covers 100,000 square meters, making it the largest indoor ski resort in the world by total snow-covered area.
The complex, which cost 29 billion yuan to build, offers year-round recreation in a region where snow is a rare phenomenon. The project received support from the local government, as it aims to boost tourism and promote winter sports.
Huafa Snow World not only recreates winter but also offers unique opportunities. The complex features five internationally rated ski slopes. The longest slope stretches 441 meters with a vertical drop of 83 meters. To maintain optimal conditions, the air temperature is kept at –6°C.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the complex includes a 33-meter ice waterfall with a 33-meter-deep diving pool. There is also a “dry zone” featuring a wave pool and a climbing wall.
For tourists’ convenience, the JW Marriott hotel with views of the snowy slopes is located directly on-site, along with shopping and dining areas. Various ticket packages are available — from three-hour passes for beginners to extended sessions for professionals.
The opening of this resort is part of China’s ambitious national program to develop winter sports and create training facilities for future champions.
