Five Key Events of the Week (8–14 November)

From 8 to 14 November 2025, China witnessed a week marked by major diplomatic engagements, significant advances in military development, and strategic economic decisions.
1. Historic State Visit by the King of Spain
On 12 November, President Xi Jinping met with King Felipe VI of Spain. This was the first state visit by a Spanish monarch to China in 18 years. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation, expand bilateral investments, and jointly explore third-country markets such as Latin America.
2. Historic State Visit by the King of Thailand
On 14 November, President Xi Jinping warmly welcomed King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand. The Thai king became the first monarch to visit China since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The leaders emphasized the strengthening of their special friendship — “Zhin Tai Phi Nong Gan” (“China and Thailand are as close as one family”) — as they marked the 50th anniversary of Sino-Thai friendship.
3. Defense Development: Commissioning of the Aircraft Carrier Fujian
On 7 November, the aircraft carrier Fujian (hull number 18) was officially commissioned. This is China’s first aircraft carrier with a full displacement of 80,000 tons and equipped with electromagnetic catapults (EMALS). Successful catapult takeoffs and arrested landings of carrier-based aircraft confirmed the vessel’s key operational capabilities. The commissioning of Fujian marks the beginning of China’s era of three aircraft carriers and represents a major milestone in the country’s military development.
4. Economic Priorities and the 15th National Games
During his inspection tour of Hainan and Guangdong provinces (6–9 November), Xi Jinping identified two major priorities:
Economy: He emphasized the importance of building the Hainan Free Trade Port to high standards and called for deepening reforms to advance the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
Sports: On 9 November, Xi Jinping declared the 15th National Games open. For the first time, China’s major multi-sport event is being co-hosted by Guangdong Province along with the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.
5. Strengthening Diplomatic Relations
Throughout the week, China actively developed diplomatic ties in several directions:
United States: Vice Premier He Lifeng called for stable development of trade and economic relations despite disagreements highlighted in a U.S. House committee report.
Norway: Constructive talks were held with Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide on trade, the “green” economy, and innovation.
Guinea: Vice Premier Liu Guozhong attended the commissioning ceremony of the Simandou iron ore project, underscoring the importance of resource cooperation between China and Guinea.
