Germany has launched preparations for the construction of the largest battery-based energy storage system (BESS) in Europe. The project, named GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000, will feature an impressive power capacity of 1 GW and an energy capacity of 4 GWh. The project in Jänschwalde is being implemented by LEAG Clean Power GmbH and Fluence Energy.

Once completed, the GigaBattery facility will play a key role in stabilizing Germany’s energy grid. It will allow efficient balancing of the rapidly fluctuating production of renewable energy from solar and wind sources.

The installation will become part of LEAG’s large-scale GigawattFactory initiative, which includes a set of low-carbon assets:

• Solar and wind power plants.

• BESS systems (such as GigaBattery).

• Production of “green” hydrogen.

The system will use Fluence’s Smartstack technology — an innovative modular solution for large-scale energy storage, offering up to 7.5 MWh of capacity per block. Smartstack is delivered in two parts and assembled on-site, significantly simplifying transportation logistics while maintaining high capacity despite its size being larger than that of a standard container.
