According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global spending on the construction of new data centers is expected to reach $580 billion in 2025, which is $40 billion more than investments in oil exploration.

By the end of the decade, energy consumption by AI-driven data centers is projected to increase fivefold, surpassing the current levels of all types of facilities combined. The United States will account for the largest share of this growth, while the remainder will be distributed between Europe and China. Most new centers are being built near major cities and are designed for capacities exceeding 200 MW.

In some regions, including northern Virginia and Dublin, grid connection delays can last for several years due to insufficient power supply. Additionally, a shortage of energy infrastructure components is slowing modernization efforts aimed at meeting the growing demands of AI systems.

According to IEA projections, by 2035 renewable energy sources will become the primary power supply for data centers.
