OpenAI has officially unveiled a new AI-powered browser called ChatGPT Atlas, which the company claims will redefine how people interact with the internet. The browser integrates a full-fledged AI agent capable of remembering user preferences and performing routine tasks — such as booking tickets or editing documents — using voice commands.

The announcement took place on October 22. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that Atlas is designed to become a constant “companion” for users online, directly competing with Google’s ecosystem and AI-driven search engines like Perplexity.

Unlike traditional browsers, Atlas employs an AI agent that remembers a user’s activity history and interests, gradually becoming more personalized over time.

Key features introduced by developers:

• AI automation: The browser can handle routine tasks such as making reservations, editing documents, or placing online orders through simple user commands.

• Split-screen (Cursor chat): While browsing, the interface simultaneously displays the webpage and a ChatGPT chat window. This allows users to generate summaries, fact-check, or edit webpage text on the fly.

ChatGPT Atlas is already available for macOS. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are expected soon. OpenAI has announced a “global” rollout, though initial access will likely be limited to countries where ChatGPT is already supported.

The AI browser market is rapidly expanding: Google is integrating its Gemini assistant into Chrome, and Perplexity recently introduced its Comet AI search engine. OpenAI aims to stand out through the deep integration of its AI agent, developed by a team that includes veterans from Chrome, Firefox, and Apple.
