The main events in China during the past week (October 18–24) focused on long-term economic planning, international trade diplomacy, and groundbreaking infrastructure projects. The key outcome was the adoption of recommendations for the new Five-Year Plan.

1. CPC Plenum Sets the Course for 2026–2030

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held its fourth plenum, where it adopted recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030). The communiqué emphasized priorities such as high-quality development, science and technology, innovation, and the well-being of the people.

2. Trade Talks with the U.S. in Malaysia

Amid ongoing trade tensions, China and the United States are holding a new round of high-level trade and economic consultations (October 24–27) in Malaysia. The talks aim to find solutions before the tariff truce expires on November 10.

3. Dialogue with the EU on Semiconductors

This week, the Chinese and Netherlands Ministers of Commerce held a phone conversation discussing the situation surrounding semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia. In addition, China and the European Union agreed to hold an expanded meeting in Brussels within the framework of their export control dialogue mechanism.

4. Launch of the Arctic Express

China’s Sea Legend Shipping announced plans to launch regular summer operations of the world’s first Arctic Express route between China and Europe by 2026. The Northern Sea Route will take 26 days, significantly reducing delivery time compared to the traditional route via the Suez Canal.

5. CR450 — The World’s Fastest Train

China’s next-generation high-speed train, the CR450, set a new record by reaching 453 km/h during preliminary tests. This project is a key initiative aimed at setting new global standards in high-speed rail technology.
