Istanbul Connects History and Modernity, Ranking Among Europe’s Top Cities
Istanbul has been named one of Europe’s top five cities for short trips by Which? magazine and was also recognized as one of the most suitable destinations for family vacations, according to a survey by Condé Nast Traveller readers.
In the first nine months of 2025, the city welcomed more than 13.5 million tourists, confirming its sustained popularity among travelers.
Istanbul’s historic peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains one of the city’s main attractions. Among the most visited sites are Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern, which together create the city’s unique historical character. Nearby, the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market preserve the atmosphere of the East, with its colors, aromas, and traditions.
Bosphorus cruises continue to be a popular activity, offering panoramic views of historic mansions, minarets, and towers. Modern cultural hubs are concentrated in the Galataport, Karaköy districts, and along Istiklal Street, where museums, galleries, and cafes operate.
In autumn, Istanbul hosts a series of major cultural events, including a James Cameron exhibition at the Istanbul Cinema Museum, Steve McCurry’s photo exhibition The Haunted Eye, and the 29th Istanbul Theatre Festival.
The city is also known for its culinary culture. Visitors enjoy traditional breakfasts, street foods such as kokoreç, kumpir, and midye dolma, as well as dinners in meyhanes serving meze, fish, and rakı.
Istanbul continues to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s most popular destinations, combining a rich historical heritage with a vibrant modern cultural life.
