From October 19 to 23, the 16th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was held in Geneva. The Turkmen delegation, led by Minister of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations Nazar Agakhanov, actively participated in key economic forums.

Speaking at the plenary session on October 20, Minister Agakhanov emphasized Turkmenistan's unwavering commitment to the principles of open, mutually beneficial, and sustainable trade and economic cooperation. He also noted the need to strengthen partnerships between developing countries, which is a priority of the country's foreign policy.

An important focus of the Turkmen delegation's work was participation in a panel discussion and a special conference for landlocked countries (LLDCs). At this event, ministers adopted a joint statement aimed at developing transport and trade links, which is fully consistent with Turkmenistan's strategy for creating multimodal transit corridors.

Important bilateral talks were held on the sidelines of the forum, including with UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebecca Greenspan. The parties discussed priority areas of cooperation, including developing digital trade, supporting export potential, and enhancing the resilience of global supply chains in uncertain times.

Constructive meetings were also held with representatives of the Geneva Neutrality Centre, the Swiss Joint Chamber of Commerce (JCC), and the International Trade Centre (ITC). The main topics of these talks were prospects for expanding cooperation, practical steps to promote Turkmen exports to new markets, and strengthening sustainable economic relations, according to the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN Office in Geneva.

Turkmenistan's participation in the 16th session of UNCTAD and the intensive negotiating marathon in Geneva served as confirmation of the country's practical economic diplomacy. The meetings not only cemented Turkmenistan's role as an active participant in global trade but also expanded access to key digital and institutional tools. This will allow the country to more effectively diversify its foreign economic relations, integrate the principle of permanent neutrality into international economic processes, and strengthen its position as an important logistics hub for landlocked countries in Central Asia.
