Türkiye has become the largest steel producer in Europe and ranked seventh in the world, strengthening its position in the global steel industry, according to Veysel Yayan, Secretary General of the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TÇÜD).

According to the organization, Türkiye produced 36.9 million tons of steel in 2024 and, based on the first eight months of 2025, moved up from eighth to seventh place in the global rankings. Turkish steel is exported to more than 180 countries, and the sector is known for its resilience, flexibility, and high-quality products.

Türkiye produced 36.9 million tons of steel in 2024 and, based on the first eight months of 2025.

World Steel Association statistics show that China remains the largest producer, with over 1 billion tons, accounting for more than half of global output. It is followed by India (149 million tons), Japan (84 million tons), the United States (79.5 million tons), Russia (71 million tons), South Korea (63.6 million tons), Türkiye (36.9 million tons), Germany (37.2 million tons), Brazil (33.8 million tons), and Iran (31.4 million tons). These ten countries together account for approximately 85% of global steel production.

Yayan noted that China’s dominance makes the global steel market sensitive to domestic fluctuations: even a 1% decline in consumption in China results in an additional 10 million tons being exported, intensifying global competition.

He added that new protectionist measures, including U.S. tariff increases and a 47% reduction in steel import quotas by the European Union, complicate Türkiye’s producers’ access to foreign markets.
