Turkmenistan and the University of Montana launch partnership on cybersecurity and water resources

On October 22, in Missoula (USA), a series of working meetings took place between the Turkmen delegation and the University of Montana’s leadership, including Vice Provost Andrea Lawrence. The main goal of the visit was to systematically develop cooperation in line with Turkmenistan’s higher education modernization priorities.

The sides identified long-term partnership areas to be formalized in a Memorandum of Cooperation with an annual roadmap:

• Cybersecurity and IT: The sides discussed the creation of short-term professional development programs for IT instructors from Turkmen universities and the establishment of a joint educational laboratory. The Vice Rector of the Turkmen Institute of Telecommunications and Informatics expressed readiness to expand cooperation in geographic information systems (GIS).

• Water Security and Ecology: Both sides confirmed their interest in developing a pilot online module on water resource management, ecology, and environmentally sustainable technologies. The Vice Rector of Turkmen State University emphasized the importance of an interdisciplinary approach.

• Academic Mobility: The sides agreed to launch joint courses on sustainable development and IT, as well as academic exchange programs for faculty members and student internships.

Following the visit, the parties agreed to promptly prepare a draft Memorandum, appoint coordinators, and establish a working group. Deputy Minister of Education of Turkmenistan Azat Atayev emphasized that cooperation with the University of Montana aligns with Turkmenistan’s strategic goal of strengthening human capital and introducing modern educational practices.

The Turkmen delegation also invited representatives of the University of Montana to visit Ashgabat to participate in relevant educational forums.
