Operational tests have begun in China for the high-speed train CR450, described as the world’s fastest electric train. The trials are taking place on the Shanghai–Chongqing–Chengdu high-speed railway line, according to China Media Group.

The CR450 prototype has been undergoing continuous testing since the end of last year. After meeting all performance indicators — including reaching a maximum speed of 450 kilometers per hour — the train must complete 600,000 kilometers of fault-free operation before being approved for commercial service.

The record-breaking speed was achieved through improved aerodynamics and a redesigned structure. The train’s nose was extended from 12.5 to 15 meters, reducing air resistance.

According to developers, overall aerodynamic drag has been reduced by 22%. Engineers achieved this through fully enclosed bogies and lowered skirts beneath the carriages, minimizing the contact between the wheels and the air. The train’s height was reduced by 20 centimeters, and its weight decreased by 50 tons.

Over the past five years, specialists have continuously refined the CR450’s design, recording performance improvements as small as 0.1%.

The train can accelerate from zero to 350 kilometers per hour in just 4 minutes and 40 seconds — 100 seconds faster than the current Fuxing series trains, which require 6 minutes and 20 seconds to reach the same speed.
