Strengthening global security and nuclear non-proliferation were key topics at a constructive meeting at the headquarters of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). Ambassador Hemra Amannazarov, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN in Vienna, held talks with Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the CTBTO.

At the beginning of the conversation, Dr. Floyd warmly recalled his meeting with the President of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat in 2024, expressing appreciation for Turkmenistan's continued commitment to global peace and security.

The Turkmen delegation reaffirmed the country's principled position on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as outlined at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. As an active participant in the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, Turkmenistan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening peace, which is fully consistent with its status of permanent neutrality, the 30th anniversary of which is celebrated in 2025 as part of the International Year of Peace and Trust.

The parties discussed joint celebrations of anniversary dates. Specifically, 2026 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, signed by Turkmenistan on September 24, 1996. Turkmenistan and the CTBTO expressed their readiness to explore the possibility of organizing commemorative events.

The meeting also touched on Turkmenistan's practical contribution to the CTBT monitoring system: the parties reviewed the current status and expected upgrade of Primary Seismic Station 44 (PS44), which Turkmenistan hosts.

The dialogue in Vienna reaffirmed the close and strengthening partnership between Turkmenistan and the CTBTO, as well as their shared commitment to achieving the goals of a nuclear-weapon-free world and international security.

It was previously reported that Turkmenistan may accede to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
