Starting December 10, new strict online safety rules will take effect in Australia. These regulations prohibit users under the age of 16 from using services and applications that authorities consider potentially dangerous. The decision affects not only social media networks but also some unexpected platforms.

The list provided by the authorities for companies’ self-assessment includes many popular global platforms, among them:

• Social networks: Meta (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), TikTok, X (Twitter), Snapchat, Pinterest, and Reddit.

• Gaming and streaming platforms: Roblox, Steam, Twitch, and Kick.

• Unexpected restriction: GitHub has drawn particular attention — a platform primarily designed for sharing source code and collaborative software development.

Additionally, the list includes dating services such as Match (owner of Tinder), Lego Play, and HubApp. The regulator notes that the list is still preliminary and may change before December.

The inclusion of GitHub caused surprise online. Users point out that Australian teenagers interested in programming will now have to look for alternative platforms or find ways to bypass the restrictions.

Platform owners have the right to appeal the Australian government’s decision. The regulator’s goal is to encourage companies to exercise self-control. Authorities hope the new rules will significantly improve children’s safety in the digital space.
