Samsung Unveils New 200-Megapixel ISOCELL HP5 Sensor for Smartphones
Samsung has announced its new 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP5 sensor for smartphones. The sensor features a more compact design compared to previous models and incorporates several advanced technologies aimed at enhancing photo and video quality. It is designed for use by various smartphone manufacturers.
The ISOCELL HP5 has a 1/1.56-inch optical format and a resolution of 16,384 × 12,288 pixels, with each pixel measuring 0.5 μm. The sensor supports 2x optical zoom and up to 6x seamless zoom when used with a 3x optical lens. It also features Super QPD (PDAF) technology for improved autofocus performance.
Video recording is supported in Full HD at 240 frames per second, 4K at 120 fps, and 8K at 30 fps. The sensor can capture RAW images with 8-, 10-, 12-, and 14-bit depth.
According to Samsung, despite the smaller size, image quality remains high thanks to Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) and Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) technologies, which increase the full-well capacity (FWC) of each pixel. The enhanced DTI Center Cut (DCC) technology further improves autofocus accuracy and reduces noise levels. The company reports that these innovations boost the conversion gain by up to 150% and reduce random noise by 3–40%.
Industry sources indicate that the ISOCELL HP5 will debut as the telephoto sensor in the upcoming OPPO Find X9 Pro, expected to launch on October 16. Other Chinese manufacturers are also planning to adopt the new sensor, although Samsung itself reportedly has no current plans to use it in its Galaxy lineup.
