OpenAI has signed a multi-year agreement with AMD for the supply of graphics processing units (GPUs) to build new AI data centers. The total capacity of these computing clusters will reach 6 gigawatts (GW), roughly equivalent to the average electricity demand of the entire nation of Singapore.

The exact value of the deal has not been disclosed, but analysts estimate it to be worth tens of billions of dollars. The agreement includes a strategic component — OpenAI has obtained the right to acquire up to 10% of AMD shares through a warrant (a long-term option). OpenAI will be able to purchase up to 160 million shares at par value upon achieving specific milestones, including AMD’s share price reaching $600.

The new 6-GW clusters will be built using next-generation AMD Instinct MI450 accelerators. The first 1-GW phase is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2026.

For OpenAI, this contract is a crucial step in diversifying its hardware suppliers, reducing dependency on a single manufacturer. Earlier, on September 22, the company announced plans to deploy, together with Nvidia, an infrastructure with a total capacity of at least 10 GW, with the first phase also planned for 2026.

For AMD, the agreement marks an important milestone in its competitive race against Nvidia in the highly profitable AI accelerator market. News of the deal immediately boosted AMD’s stock, which surged by more than 28% in pre-market trading.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly working on its own AI chip in collaboration with Broadcom, highlighting the company’s aggressive strategy to secure computational independence and power.
