China Offsets Labor Shortage with Record Number of Robots
China is rapidly expanding its use of industrial robots in response to a shrinking labor force. Over the past year, about 295,000 new machines were deployed in the manufacturing sector. According to the South China Morning Post, this large-scale adoption allows the country to maintain high competitiveness in manufacturing industries.
China’s population began to decline in 2022, and last year alone, the number of residents decreased by 1.39 million. This demographic challenge is prompting employers to actively turn to automation.
China is already the world leader in industrial robot usage. The country now has around 295,000 robots — an impressive 54% of the global total.
As Tsinghua University expert Gao Xudong notes, despite the overall population decline, China manages to maintain competitiveness through widespread robot adoption and improvements in workforce education.
Analysts predict that humanoid robots will soon find even broader applications across various sectors of the economy. However, experts also warn that the shift to mass automation comes with challenges: machine operation is not always cheaper and does not necessarily guarantee higher work quality compared to human labor. Successfully overcoming these obstacles remains a key task for China’s industry on its path toward full-scale robotization.
