NASA Plans to Create Wi-Fi Network on the Moon for Lunar Missions
As part of its Artemis program, NASA aims to land astronauts on the Moon within the next five years and establish a permanent base there. Successfully achieving this goal requires the development of an infrastructure to ensure seamless communication between various mission elements, including landers, scientific modules, and the orbital station Lunar Gateway. A crucial step in this process will be the creation of a Wi-Fi network that will operate both on the lunar surface and in orbit.
To develop the next generation of the Wi-Fi system, NASA has signed a contract worth $150,000 with Solstar Space. The system, named Lunar Wi-Fi Access Point (LWIFI-AP), will provide reliable communication for Artemis program missions, as well as for commercial missions delivering cargo and conducting scientific research on the Moon through the CLPS program.
The LWIFI-AP system will be designed with requirements for size, weight, and energy efficiency in mind, allowing it to be integrated into various devices such as landers and lunar rovers, as well as the modules of the Lunar Gateway station. This will ensure communication with both astronauts on the Moon's surface and platforms in orbit.
One of the key challenges is creating equipment capable of withstanding the Moon's extreme conditions, including large temperature fluctuations, radiation, and lunar dust. Solstar Space is developing solutions that meet these conditions and satisfy the requirements for thermal and radiation resistance. If successful, the technology will be ready for use in missions conducted by NASA and other contractors of the Artemis program.
This project will become an important part of the infrastructure for the future permanent base on the Moon. The Wi-Fi system is expected to be ready for use within the next few years and will help ensure constant communication for scientific research, navigation, and the coordination of operations during future lunar missions.
