Turkmenistan to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), jointly with the Institute of State, Law and Democracy with support of the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Turkmenistan cooperate to launch the campaign dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). In Turkmenistan, the campaign will focus on raising awareness of government officials and the public in general about human rights, the country's international human rights obligations, and the mandate and activities of the Ombudsman. To that end, a series of awareness-raising activities, including round tables on human rights in resource centres, involving civil servants, lawyers, civil society and youth is planned. The “Brain Ring” games and lectures will be held at the country’s universities. “Only through empowering, advocating and promoting rights of individuals by efforts of not only state but also non-state actors, including academia, civil society, local communities and development partners, there can be seen an increased demand in protection of rights and shift towards accountability in practices of state authorities,” noted Yelena Butova, UNDP Project Manager. A one-year global company in honor of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - the first international instrument that laid the foundations for the development and adoption of international standards in the field of human rights and freedoms - was launched at the UN in December 2017. Turkmenistan's participation in this campaign will be an excellent opportunity to tell about the purposeful work being done in the country to protect constitutional human rights and freedoms, proclaimed the highest value of the society and the state.
