Turkmenistan, following its policy of implementing environmentally friendly energy sources, is actively developing hydrogen energy. This area, aligned with the global agenda of transitioning to low-carbon fuels and combating climate change, is one of the priorities of the policy pursued by the Hero-Arkadag and the Estemeed President.

A Hydrogen Energy Center has been established at the International University of Oil and Gas named after Yagshygeldi Kakayev in Ashgabat. The Center operates in accordance with the “Roadmap for the Development of International Cooperation in the Field of Hydrogen Energy of Turkmenistan for 2022–2023.”

Within this framework, the Center has already achieved specific scientific results. In particular, research has been conducted on producing green hydrogen fuel from water via electrolysis, and a laboratory installation for producing hydrogen from natural gas using an innovative plasma-chemical method has been created.

For experience exchange and personnel training, Turkmenistan actively collaborates with leading foreign partners. In 2022–2023, seminars and meetings were held with specialists from the University of Tsukuba (Japan), Iwatani and Kawasaki Heavy Ind. companies, the IAEA, and Imperial College London. In addition, the Center regularly conducts advanced training courses for representatives of the state concerns “Turkmengaz,” “Turkmennebit,” and the Ministry of Energy.

During the recent visit of the President of Turkmenistan to Japan, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the University of Tsukuba, providing for joint scientific research and training programs for 2025–2026.
