Turkmenistan voices its view on the Afghan problem in the UN Security Council


On Friday, January 19, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, Atayeva Aksoltan, attended the Ministerial Debate of the Security Council, devoted to the regional partnership of Afghanistan and Central Asia, linked to security and development.
During remarks, the Turkmen diplomat confirmed the unchanged position of the official Ashgabat regarding the Afghan problem, the scale of which goes far beyond the region: "Turkmenistan consistently stands for the principled position on the need to develop a political and diplomatic approach to the settlement of the situation in a neighboring country."
Turkmenistan's constructive proposals on the development of fundamentally new mechanisms for stabilizing the situation, socio-cultural, economic revival in Afghanistan clearly demonstrates this foreign policy orientation of Turkmenistan. These are infrastructure projects initiated by the Turkmen side, in which the southern neighbor is also actively involved.
Peace and security are inherent factors for the prosperity of the region and Afghanistan. In this context, Turkmen-Afghan cooperation, confidently built on the principles of good-neighborliness and traditional friendship, is considered inextricably linked with the agenda of broad international cooperation.
Noting that Turkmenistan is an active participant in international efforts to strengthen peace and security in Central Asia, Atayeva pointed to the solid experience accumulated by the country in working out solutions in the sphere of regional disarmament, water and energy, environmental problems, countering the challenges and threats of the present.
At the conclusion of the speech, the Permanent Representative, reassuring the world community in Turkmenistan's active support of the activities of UNRCCA and UNAMA in ensuring peace and sustainable development in the region, called Afghanistan and regional partners for continuing their efforts to strengthen regional dialogue and cooperation.
The discussion platform was initiated by Kazakhstan under country’s monthly presidency at UN Security Council. Representatives of Afghanistan, Belgium, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan were invited to participate in the event.
