Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced his resignation on Sunday, saying the decision was made “at an appropriate time” after important state affairs were concluded. The move is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition of power and refreshing the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
In his statement, Ishiba said he had completed all necessary actions, including successfully concluding trade talks with the United States. This, he said, had created favorable conditions for handing over the post to a successor. He stressed that he had decided to step down to make room for a new leader who could lead the party in the coming period.
Since Shigeru Ishiba took office last year, the LDP has faced several challenges, prompting the party to discuss the need for internal reforms. The prime minister has accepted responsibility for the recent election results and said his departure would allow the party to hold an emergency vote to elect a new leader. He will serve as acting prime minister until his successor is elected, international media reported.
