Registration of candidates for the Khalk Maslakhaty Chamber of the Turkmen bicameral parliament has started


At its meeting, the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan has registered the first 17 candidates from Ashgabat for elections to the Khalk Maslakhaty (People’s Council) Chamber of the new bicameral parliament Milli Gengesh (National Council). Newspapers of Turkmenistan started to publish biographies of candidates who received the appropriate certificates. It was noted at the meeting that total 111 candidates were nominated for elections to the Khalk Maslakhaty Chamber in five regions and the city of Ashgabat. They will “compete” to have 48 seats in this chamber of parliament. Another 8 members are nominated by the President of Turkmenistan. In addition, according to the law, each ex-president of the country will be a member of the Khalk Maslakhaty except he refuses to use this right. The meeting of the Central Election Commission also considered the election venues in the regions and the capital, where on the day of elections on March 28 the voting of members of the regional Khalk Maslakhaty and the city of Ashgabat will take place. A citizen of Turkmenistan, having reached the age of 30, with higher education, and permanently residing in Turkmenistan for the past ten years, will be eligible to be elected and appointed as a member of the Khalk Maslakhaty.
