Researchers at the University of Surrey have developed an innovative navigation system called PEnG, which does not rely on GPS. The technology is based on artificial intelligence and computer vision. During trials, the system showed outstanding accuracy: its margin of error was only 22 meters, which is 40 times better than traditional satellite systems.

The PEnG system is particularly effective where a GPS signal is weak or absent, such as in tunnels, underground parking garages, and so-called "urban canyons." It determines location in two stages: first, it analyzes satellite and street images for an approximate position, and then refines it using data from a standard camera, transforming it into a powerful navigation tool.

The developers note that this type of technology is essential for the development of the next generation of autonomous vehicles. If the working prototype trials are successful, mass implementation of the system is expected as early as 2027.
