Imagine a plane that flies. Then a plane lands on a runway, shrugs its wings off, turns into a train and rolls on to rails to drop you off at your local station. An unusual project, which will combine air and rail transportation, intended to be implemented by Maurice Ricci, head of Akka Technologies, that works to offer technology solutions for advanced transportation services such as autonomous cars and efficient flight. “Planes need to become more efficient, less polluting and less noisy,” said Ricci. “Our role is to point our customers to technologies of the future.”Arslan KEMALOV
The Link & Fly concept aims to make air travel as easy as stepping onto the subway. The idea is that you head to your local train station when it is time to fly to another city and a tube-shaped passenger train takes you straight to the airport. The pod then rolls onto the runway, where it is affixed to a pair of wings with a cockpit, and the craft takes off to fly to your destination.
Upon landing, the train/fuselage detaches from the wings and rolls out of the airport to local train stations to drop you at a convenient location.
According to the designers, the Link & Fly aircraft is billed as a 162-seat plane with an option for cargo delivery with a maximum payload of 21,000 kg. It is expected that with engines mounted on a large delta-shaped wing, the “flying train” is envisioned with a range of 2,200 km, a cruise speed of more than 700 km/hour, and a maximum cruise altitude of 12 km. The design has wingspan of 48.8 meters, is 33.8 meters long and 8.2 meters high.
Akka Technologies works with companies like Airbus, Renault, and Dassault. The company recently pitched the Link & Fly concept to Boeing. Of course, the flying train is not something we will see anytime soon, but it is a unique approach to air travel.
