SMUT: medical students master the profession during the summer practice

Real life practice plays a huge role in the training of future health professionals. Every year students of the State Medical University of Turkmenistan (SMUT) consolidate the theoretical knowledge received in the university in various profile institutions of the country. Within four weeks they go into the work of polyclinics, hospitals, emergency stations. This year, about two hundred students of the State Medical University were distributed to the 1st, 4th, 7th, 9th and 10th Health Houses of Ashgabat and some medical centers of the capital.Altyn Ashirov
First-year students are practicing as assistant nurses in the Medical Center named after S.A. Niyazov. Students learn to observe ethical norms and rules in working with small and adult patients, caring for patients, as well as maintaining a sanitary and hygienic and anti-epidemic regime in medical organizations.
"Many people think that junior medical staff has nothing to do with medicine at all and is only cleaning. But for this summer we learned to communicate with patients correctly, we studied the norms and methods of disinfection of premises, processing of medical instruments and means of patient care. We collected the analyzes, on the procedures and during the transportation of the patients, tracked the changes in their condition, - the students of the 1st course of the SMUT list their lessons. "All this knowledge is purely practical, you can not learn it from the books, but very much depends on it."
Sophomore students undergo practical training in the Ashgabat Emergency Center. They help paramedics as nurses, go under the patronage of experienced doctors to take calls and provide first aid:
"At first we were worried, because work on the ambulance is very responsible. Here we were taught how to react quickly to the situation, take urgent measures to solve it, make the right choice of the method of delivering the patient to hospitals ... ".
The practice of third-year students is to help the procedural nurse in polyclinics. It is on this year of training that Turkmen students learn the skills of documentation and learn to use medical products, providing assistance. In equipped with the latest technology polyclinics of the capital there is no shortage of either training materials or professionals who are ready to explain all the details to budding colleagues.
"Gradually we understand that the main thing is to fill your hand. It is necessary to get used to work with medicaments, do injections, accurately measure medicine. In practice, we develop experience that will be useful to us in the subsequent training."
In the fourth course, the production practice is the most intense period of the year. The students can go through it in three directions: surgery, obstetrics and therapy - students are trained alternately in the hospitals and clinics of the capital, helping doctors and taking skills.
"A lot of information, and all of it needs to be learned in a short time. Practice is an exam after exams: we show doctors what we learned at the university, and they supplement our knowledge with experience."
In the fifth year students of a medical college are already almost formed specialists, and they are entrusted to conduct reception in polyclinics as family doctors. For all 4 weeks they are immersed in medical everyday life: they get acquainted with the basic principles of the organization of medical and preventive care, with the organization and scope of work of a general practitioner, and the modern diagnostic capabilities of a polyclinic service. It is during this period that students are formed with the idea of clinical examination, primary and secondary prevention in outpatient settings, questions of medical examination and sanatorium-and-spa treatment.
At the end of the university students are sent to medical institutions of the country for internship. Many people go to work where they have been practicing. So did Melika Kurbanova.
- I studied at the University of Medicine from 2008 to 2014. In the 5th year we were sent to work practice in the newly opened 10th polyclinic, and I really enjoyed it. So after receiving the diploma, I stayed to work here as a family doctor.
Within the framework of the State Program "Health", the level of medical services provided to the population increases every year. Not the least role in this is played by graduates of the country's highest medical school. Having looked at them at work, we can safely say that the future of our medicine is in reliable and capable hands!
