In an interview with the publication Report, newly appointed Romanian Minister of Energy, Bogdan-Gruia Ivan, announced that Romania could import up to 9 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from the Caspian region.

These LNG deliveries will be made possible through a collaboration between the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the Romanian company Romgaz. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding in October 2022. Consulting firms were brought in to assess the project's feasibility, confirming its technical, economic, and commercial viability, contingent on a suitable financing model and established logistics.

The project involves several key stages:

Construction of a gas pipeline from Azerbaijani fields to the Georgian coast

Development of gas liquefaction plants and LNG terminals in Georgia and Romania

Creation of marine transportation infrastructure

Ivan noted that the parties are currently evaluating the technical and financial parameters of the project. Although a final decision has not yet been reached, the dialogue between the countries remains active and constructive. This highlights their mutual interest in developing alternative gas supply routes and strengthening energy security in the Black Sea region.
