Makhachkala port to establish ferry service with Turkmenistan
The Port of Makhachkala plans to establish ferry services with Turkmenistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan by 2030, a move expected to significantly expand the transport capabilities of the Caspian Sea region.
To prepare for the launch of these new rail and road routes, the port is undergoing a large-scale infrastructure modernization. The project is projected to increase the port's annual cargo turnover by 2 million tons, thereby boosting the efficiency of its logistical operations.
A dedicated area will be built on the pier to accelerate cargo processing, with the capacity to hold up to 200 containers at once. This solution will streamline loading and unloading operations and enhance the port's appeal to international partners.
The Makhachkala Sea Commercial Port is Russia's ice-free, deep-water port on the Caspian Sea. It serves as a crucial strategic link for connecting the transport system of Southern Russia with Central Asian states, Iran, the Transcaucasus, and other countries in the region.
