Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation: Russia will Support Avaza Initiatives at the Global Level
Avaza, August 4 | ORIENT. On the sidelines of the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing States, a meeting was held between Speaker of the Parliament of Turkmenistan Dunyagozel Gulmanova and Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev. During the talks, the parties discussed a wide range of issues related to strengthening inter-parliamentary dialogue.
After the meeting, Konstantin Kosachev commented on its results for journalists, outlining key areas of cooperation.
Bilateral Initiatives and an Official Visit
"We hope that Ms. Gulmanova will find the opportunity to pay an official visit to the Russian Federation on the invitation of Chairperson of the Federation Council Valentina Ivanovna Matviyenko. The corresponding invitation was conveyed today," Kosachev said.
He emphasized that the parties count on further institutionalization of inter-parliamentary cooperation. There are several formats for this: from the active work of “friendship groups” to the possible creation of a bilateral inter-parliamentary commission.
Regional and Global Dimension
In the context of regional cooperation, Kosachev noted that the parties discussed the development of parliamentary cooperation in the Ashgabat format (5+1), which involves five Central Asian states and Russia. We are genuinely interested in this format being regular, and it looks like it will be so," he emphasized.
Speaking about the global level, Kosachev proposed to submit the issues discussed at the Avaza conference for consideration by the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva in October. He noted that if the Turkmen side puts forward such an initiative, Russia will definitely support it.
