Turkmenistan and Afghanistan have signed an agreement to develop the infrastructure of the port of Turgundi, a key trade hub connecting the two countries. The $5 million agreement aims to strengthen regional transport connectivity and improve transit efficiency between South and Central Asia.

The agreement was concluded between the Afghan Railway Authority, part of the Ministry of Public Works, and state-owned railway construction company of Turkmenistan Demiryollary Gurlushyk, Ariananews reports. The move is part of broader bilateral efforts to harmonize rail networks and streamline cross-border trade.

According to a statement from the Afghan Ministry of Public Works, the agreement envisages the design and construction by the Turkmen side of modern cargo handling facilities, including storage facilities, along the Turkmen-Herat railway line. The upgrade is expected to significantly increase the port’s capacity and improve operational efficiency.

The development of the Turgundi dry port is seen by officials from both countries as a major milestone in efforts to position Afghanistan as a land bridge for regional trade. The improved infrastructure is expected to not only increase import and export volumes, but also enhance Afghanistan’s role in cross-border logistics.

The agreement follows a series of joint initiatives between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan aimed at deepening economic cooperation, particularly in the railway and energy sectors. Officials have consistently emphasized that regional connectivity is the foundation for long-term economic growth and stability.

The Turgundi modernization project will not only facilitate trade but will also create new commercial opportunities, improve logistics capacity, and contribute to the broader development goals of both countries through a sustainable regional partnership.
