Shanghai Film Festival: from AI Animation to Kung Fu classics revival
The Shanghai Film Festival showcased two significant projects leveraging artificial intelligence to transform filmmaking. The first is "A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border," a feature-length animated film created by a team of just 30 individuals using the AI tool Quantum Animation. This technology handles core tasks from plot development and animation to voice synthesis, considerably shortening production timelines.
The second project involves the extensive restoration of one hundred classic martial arts films. Developers are employing computer vision and neural network technologies to enhance visuals and audio, restoring colors and eliminating noise. The initial ten films selected for this treatment include hits such as "Drunken Master" and "Fist of Fury".
The objective of these initiatives is not merely to update classic films but also to establish a new media ecosystem around the genre, enabling older films to be revitalized in the form of games, anime, and television series. The creators emphasize that AI serves not to replace human creativity but rather to automate routine tasks, thereby accelerating the creative process. To support this, a research center has been established in Shanghai for specialist training, and authorities have mandated the labeling of AI-generated content to ensure safety.
