Google updates “Phone” app with New Material 3 Expressive Design
Google has begun implementing a new Material 3 Expressive design into its “Phone” application, aiming to simplify navigation and contact searching. The update is gradually becoming available to beta testers.
Key changes include a redesigned bottom menu bar featuring three primary tabs: “Home”, “Keypad”, and “Voicemail”. “Favorites” is now located within the “Home” tab. The call log now displays each call as a separate entry. A new gesture for answering or declining calls—a left/right swipe—is also being tested.
A comprehensive redesign is anticipated in September, at which point a Pixel VIP widget, offering detailed contact information, will become available for Pixel smartphones. The sixteenth version of Android, released in June 2025, does not yet include these changes.
