Chinese scientists have achieved a significant breakthrough by creating a novel ceramic composite capable of withstanding temperatures exceeding 3600°C. This capability is nearly three times greater than that of current thermal protection systems, such as those used on SpaceX's Starship. This development opens up unique prospects for the creation of hypersonic aircraft capable of traversing the atmosphere without structural degradation.

The material is based on carbides with the addition of rare elements including tungsten, tantalum, and hafnium. Its uniqueness lies in its structure: a rigid tungsten framework is enveloped by a dense layer of oxides, which protects the structure from oxidation. This allows the material to maintain its integrity even under direct laser exposure, which heats it to nearly 3800°C.

Previously, such compositions existed only in theory. Now, they are undergoing successful testing using powerful lasers, which has significantly accelerated the process of selecting optimal components.

This development holds importance beyond aviation. It will find applications in space, energy, microchip manufacturing, and the military sector, for instance, in the creation of a new generation of hypersonic weaponry.

Currently, scientists are collaborating with industry to establish production and reduce costs, while also utilizing algorithms to further enhance the material. This breakthrough could substantially alter the global landscape in high-temperature materials and hypersonic technologies, bringing closer a future where super-high-speed vehicles become a reality.
