Indian Tea Culture Showcased At Festive Reception In Ashgabat
A vibrant cultural event dedicated to India’s tea tradition and its achievements in the global tea industry took place in the capital of Turkmenistan. The reception was organized by the Embassy of India in Turkmenistan and held in a ceremonial setting, with attendees including members of the diplomatic corps, government ministries, cultural institutions and other distinguished guests.
Guests of the evening were introduced to a rich variety of Indian teas — from the renowned Darjeeling, Assam and Nilgiri to the unique Masala Chai and tea from Sikkim. A total of six types were presented, including instant varieties. Special attention was given to four teas with Geographical Indication (GI) status: Assam, Darjeeling, Nilgiri and Kangra, each known for distinctive qualities derived from their regions of origin.
The reception also featured presentations on the history and modern development of India’s tea industry. In her remarks, the Ambassador of India to Turkmenistan, Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat, highlighted that India ranks second globally in tea production and third in tea exports. Notably, 80 percent of the tea produced is consumed domestically. The size of India’s tea market in 2024 reached $11.5 billion.
Guests had the opportunity to sample the diverse teas and enjoy Indian cuisine served at an elegant banquet. The evening’s program was enriched with traditional Indian dances and cultural performances.
The ambassador also emphasized the contribution of tea tribes living in India’s northeastern states, noting their unique culture and vital role in the history of tea. Masala Chai, a symbol of Indian hospitality that blends black tea with milk, spices and sugar, held a special place in the presentation.
The event stood as a vivid example of cultural exchange and further strengthened the friendly ties between India and Turkmenistan, leaving guests with warm memories and the authentic taste of Indian tea.
