Microsoft and Asus present ROG Xbox Ally: Windows for portable gaming
Today, Microsoft and Asus introduced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, new portable consoles running an optimized version of Windows with a full-screen Xbox interface. This initiative represents Microsoft's response to the Steam Deck, aiming to integrate "the best of Xbox and Windows" into a portable form factor.
The consoles boot directly into a full-screen Xbox interface, which functions as a streamlined version of the Xbox application rather than a complete Windows desktop. This optimization frees up to 2 GB of RAM, significantly enhancing gaming performance. Users retain the option to access the standard Windows desktop if desired.
The Game Bar has also undergone significant enhancements: a quick press of the Xbox button provides access to settings, Asus's Command Center, and the new Gaming Copilot. Holding the Xbox button invokes a convenient menu for switching between applications.
Microsoft has prioritized power consumption optimization: booting into full-screen mode reduces standby power consumption by one-third compared to a conventional desktop environment. Furthermore, the Windows lock screen has been improved for enhanced controller usability.
The updated Xbox application now consolidates all PC games, including those from Steam and the Epic Games Store, into a single library. This unified library will be accessible across all Windows 11 devices. Microsoft is also developing a system analogous to Steam Deck Verified to indicate which games are optimized for portable devices.
Players will also have the ability to access Xbox games via Xbox Cloud Gaming or by streaming from their own console. The full-screen Xbox interface will initially be available on the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, with availability extending to existing ROG Ally devices and other Windows handhelds starting in 2026.
